Gang Kills Policeman, Soldier, Reports Say

An armed gang opened fire on police and soldiers in an apparent ambush outside Suva, Fiji’s capital, killing two and injuring three others, radio reports said. A military spokesman was quoted as saying the troops and police had been investigating a report of shots fired from a vehicle at ethnic Indians in Naitasiri district. As the officers approached a parked vehicle, they were shot at from the nearby jungle, triggering a brief gun battle, the reports said. “Two have died, a policeman and an army officer,” the spokesman told FM96 radio.
