Board Approves 2 New Golf Courses

Share

The Board of Supervisors approved revised plans for two 18-hole east county golf courses Tuesday, saying the developers had gone to great lengths to ease environmental concerns.

County officials hope development of a public course at Happy Camp Regional Park in the unincorporated area north of Moorpark will help the cash-strapped parks department.

The department expects the proposed Rustic Canyon Golf Course to make about $300,000 annually by its fifth year.

Supervisors rejected the city of Moorpark’s contention that an entrance on Campus Park Drive would cause traffic problems.

Opponents acknowledge that developers have been environmentally conscious--designing around sensitive plants, closing at dusk and doing no grading--but say they are concerned that ifthe course is successful, the county may decide to expand to 36 holes.

Supervisors also approved a Jack Nicklaus-designed private course at Lake Sherwood Country Club.

They lauded the developers and a local homeowners group, the Lake Sherwood Community Assn., for coming to agreement on the course.

The developer, Sherwood Development Corp., agreed it would only relocate 100 trees, not 300, and that it would expand the size of a lake and protect endangered plant life.
