Mollie R. Wootan; Retired Teacher, Accountant

Mollie R. Wootan, a retired teacher and former accountant, died Wednesday at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura after a sudden illness. She was 92.

She was born Dec. 16, 1907, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was the oldest child and only daughter of Isaac and Sarah Melberger. She grew up in New York City and attended City College of New York. After college, she worked as an accountant for the city of New York.

In 1944, she married Edward H. Wootan, who was in the Navy.

Two years later, the couple moved to California. She had been a resident of Ventura County for the last 52 years.

She returned to college after her children were grown, graduating from Cal State Northridge with a teaching credential.

For 10 years, she worked as a special education teacher for the Oxnard Union School District.

Wootan was a member of the California Teachers Assn., the National Education Assn., the National Retired Teachers Assn. and the Ventura County Retired Teachers Assn.

She was also a member of the Second Church of Christ Scientist in Ventura, Friends of the Library, the Retired Officers Assn. and the Ventura County Retired Employees Assn.

Her passions were world travel, financial analysis, books, nature, friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977.

Wootan is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Ann Wootan of Ventura, a son, Robert Wootan of Victoria, B.C., and a grandson.

According to her wishes, no service will be held.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
