Jerusalem Offer

* Re “Palestinians Already Compromised on the Holy City,” Commentary, Aug. 3: In 1948 the Israeli army entered West Jerusalem after being attacked by Jordan. In 1967 the Israeli army reunited Jerusalem. The Western Wall was restored to its people after two decades of separation inflicted by Jordan’s armies, which had invaded Jerusalem in 1948.

Jerusalem was never a capital of the Palestinians, simply because the Palestinians never had a country. President Clinton is perfectly right giving the Israelis credit for flexibility. The Palestinians would have been more flexible if Yasser Arafat’s life hadn’t been in danger, in the case of him accepting the Israeli offer.
