A job fair for people looking for work in the transportation industry will be held today at Panorama Mall.

The free event, which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is expected to attract about 1,000 participants.

Sponsors include Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-Sylmar), Caltrans, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles Police Department, AMTRAK, state Employment Development Department, Smart Shuttle, Coach USA and the Panorama Mall.

More than a dozen public agencies and private companies will be on hand to provide applicants with information on the hiring process, background checks, resume tips and explain qualifications needed for specific jobs. Participating agencies will also accept applications during the fair.

The event will bring awareness of jobs available within the transportation field, which is now looking to fill entry-level jobs that range from bus drivers, construction and maintenance to more advanced positions in engineering and designing. Many openings are high-paying union jobs that provide full benefits, organizers said.

“I hope people will walk away [from the fair] with opportunities that will come to fruition,” Cardenas said.

In a community where only 4% of residents hold bachelor’s degrees and about 55% are high school graduates, Cardenas said he hopes potential employees will “be excited to continue their education and broaden their job opportunities in the future.”

The fair will be held in the mall’s rear parking lot at 8401 Van Nuys Blvd.
