The Orange County Transportation Authority is expected today to take control of the long-awaited Metrolink station project planned here.

“We have to move on this,” said Sarah Catz, an OCTA board member. “I’m very discouraged that the city of Laguna Niguel couldn’t close the deal. They had several years to do it.”

Problems arose as the cost crept up, eventually nearing $5 million, including the price of purchasing land.

Last month, the Laguna Niguel City Council decided in closed session that it would be more efficient for OCTA to take over the project. Most of the funding is provided by or through the agency.
