A desire to keep the Capistrano Unified School District’s campuses well-lighted and cool has kept the Board of Trustees from finishing its 2000-01 budget projections.

Alarmed that the final spending plan set aside only $300,000 for what could become a $1-million energy bill, trustees approved the document last week only as a preliminary step toward a revised final budget.

School board members asked the district staff to revise the $265-million spending plan to include more money for utilities.

Since last year, the district’s energy costs have tripled for its southernmost schools, which are served by San Diego Gas & Electric Co.
