Akamai Technology Shares Gain on Intertainer PC-Broadcast Agreement

Akamai Technologies Inc. shares rose as much as 16% after it signed an agreement with closely held Intertainer to broadcast movies and video over the Internet to personal computers.

Akamai shares gained $7.94 to close at $71.38 on Nasdaq. Terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.

Akamai’s service, which uses a network of computers to store Internet content closer to consumers to speed the delivery of online content, will transmit Intertainer’s media content to consumers on an on-demand basis. Intertainer has a library of programming from more than 60 media companies, including Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. and DreamWorks SKG.

Culver City-based Intertainer’s investors include Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp. and General Electric Co.’s NBC television unit, according to its Web site. Intertainer’s service is available in Denver through Qwest Communications International Inc. and in Cincinnati through Broadwing Inc.
