SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

The City Council voted 4-0 Tuesday to allow former Councilman Gil Jones to add a narrow-gauge train for children to his mini-farm in the historic Los Rios commercial district.

Opponents of the train, including members of the Cultural Heritage Commission, said the train did not fit the historic character of the area. But Councilman David Swerdlin argued that trains have been a century-old part of San Juan’s history.

In other business, the council voted to let Saddleback Valley Christian School open classes in September at 26333 Oso Road and to hire a sheriff’s deputy to monitor traffic when children are going to and from the campus. The school must add stop signs to the intersection of Camino Capistrano and Oso Road, and widen parts of those streets before September.
