Other economic happenings this week:

* Thursday, the Commerce Department will report manufacturing orders for big-ticket goods that came in during July. In June, durable-goods orders advanced 9.7% on strength in aircraft.

* Friday, the National Assn. of Realtors will report on the number of home resales completed in July.

* Friday, the Commerce Department will offer its revised figures on the nation’s economic growth for the second quarter. It previously said gross domestic product grew at a 5.2% annual rate.

* Friday, Greenspan could provide further hints about the Fed’s thinking in a speech at an economic conference sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City at a resort at Jackson Hole, Wyo. The Fed’s policymaking committee will meet again in October, November and December.
