USC Getting $400,000 Federal Outreach Grant
USC will receive a $400,000 federal grant for use in augmenting its outreach programs in Boyle Heights and South Los Angeles, university officials said Monday.
The funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are part of $7.5 million in Community Outreach Partnership Centers grants.
Jane Pisano, USC’s senior vice president for external relations, said the money will be used to expand such efforts as a minority vendors program benefiting local businesses and women, and adopting five local schools for various programs and tutoring.
The funds, Pisano said, will help create a business improvement district in Boyle Heights, where USC’s health sciences campus is located next door to County-USC Medical Center. It also will provide funds for the school to open an Internet-based economic development center in South Los Angeles.
HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo said the grants will help institutions like USC to continue their outreach programs to nearby low-income neighborhoods.
“These grants will further help them to support innovative partnerships between the university and the community that help strengthen neighborhoods,” Cuomo said in a statement.
