Teacher Nominated to Planning Board
A longtime teacher and Calabasas area community activist was nominated Wednesday to the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission.
Harold “Hal” Helsley, who has lived in the Cold Creek community in the Santa Monica Mountains for 30 years, was named as Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky’s choice for the commission. His nomination is subject to review by the county Board of Supervisors, which is scheduled to vote on it next week.
If approved, as expected, Helsley will succeed environmental consultant Esther Feldman, who resigned from the commission.
Helsley is a science and technology teacher and school counselor who has worked in the Los Angeles public schools for the past 40 years. He also has been involved in many community activities.
For 20 years, Helsley served on the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District Board of Directors. He led a residents group that commented on the growth plan for the northern half of the Santa Monica Mountains, and served as vice chairman for the Los Angeles County Mulholland Scenic Corridor Citizens Advisory Committee.
The five-member Regional Planning Commission considers applications for developments and administers specific plan, zoning and subdivision ordinances in unincorporated Los Angeles County.
