Dodgers to Meet With Boras

The Dodgers are scheduled to meet today with agent Scott Boras, who represents coveted free agents Darren Dreifort and Alex Rodriguez.

Contacted at home Thursday night, Boras declined comment on his plans with the Dodgers. The Dodgers also would not confirm the meeting.

“We have not met about Darren for some time,” said Derrick Hall, senior vice president. “However, we had planned to reconvene those meetings.

“We’re interested in all of the free-agent pitchers, and Darren is one of them. Darren is at the top of that list because he’s our free agent.”

Chairman Bob Daly has had many discussions with Boras about Dreifort, trying to retain the hard-throwing right-hander. Today’s meeting, however, marks the first formal negotiating session in weeks after Boras rejected the club’s five-year, $45-million offer.

And then there is Rodriguez.

The Dodgers have not actively pursued the all-star shortstop, considered the top player in this class, surprising many in baseball.

Rodriguez, believed to be seeking $20 million per season, has already visited the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies.

Sources close to Rodriguez recently said that the Dodgers would not have to put on a show for Rodriguez because of Boras’ familiarity with the franchise and Fox. Boras represents six players on the Dodgers’ 25-man roster.

Boras negotiated a seven-year, $106-million contract for Kevin Brown with the Dodgers in 1998.
