Hearing Set on Restraining Order in Razor Scooter Case

U.S. District Judge Manuel R. Real will hold a hearing in Los Angeles today on whether to convert a temporary restraining order blocking 12 scooter companies from making, importing or selling similar products through Dec. 4 into a preliminary injunction. The order was sought by Razor USA, a Cerritos-based company and the leading scooter importer. Whatever the federal judge decides, he isn’t likely to put the brakes on this year’s No. 1 holiday gift, toy industry experts say. Retailers already have plenty of the items in stock. Razor moved to stop sales of some competing products after it was awarded a patent Oct. 31 for its scooter’s brake system. The company also claimed that several rival scooter companies copied the look of the Razor scooter, including its oval foot-grip pad, its polished aluminum frame and translucent colored wheels.
