Criminal theft charges against the 22-year-old grandson of former President Ronald Reagan were dropped Monday because of a lack of evidence, his attorney said.

Cameron Reagan, whose father is talk-show host Michael Reagan, had been charged with grand theft, receiving stolen property, and theft with a prior conviction over the alleged theft of jewelry from a friend’s home. But after a hearing in San Fernando Superior Court on Monday, the prosecutor dismissed the charges, said Reagan’s defense attorney, Ronald J. Lewis.

“The evidence was clear there was no crime committed,” Lewis said.

Deputy Dist. Atty. John Nantroup could not be reached for comment.

“The alleged victim--she got her 15 minutes of fame,” Lewis said. He said Cameron Reagan is a “nice kid” who unfortunately is also “gullible.”

“People use him . . . because he’s Ronald Reagan’s grandson,” Lewis said. “This was a setup.”

Reagan, who was convicted of theft last year, still faces a probation-violation hearing, said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office. He pleaded no contest in 1999 to a charge of receiving stolen property for his role in two auto burglaries and was sentenced to six months in jail.

Reagan’s parents have been extremely supportive of their son, and both were in court on Monday, Lewis said.
