Limit to Campaign Posters Explored

They cluttered street medians and sidewalks, blanketing the city in hues of mostly blue, red and green. Campaign signs were more plentiful than ever in last month’s election, officials said, prompting the city to explore changes that could limit their use.

The City Council voted unanimously this week to begin a study of Yorba Linda’s sign ordinance to see what restrictions and regulations could be put on campaign placards. Any official action to change existing regulations would require a public hearing before the Planning Commission and City Council before it could take effect.

With 10 candidates running in November for three seats on the City Council, and others seeking election to the Yorba Linda Water District and other posts, campaign signs seemed more plentiful than ever this year, officials said.

A newly seated City Council voted Tuesday to uphold the wishes of former council members who said Nov. 21 that they wanted to devise a way to limit the use of campaign signs.

Former council members Barbara Kiley, Mark Schwing and Henry Wedaa gave up their seats this week to Alan Castallano, Michael Duvall and Jim Winder. Ken Ryan was reappointed as mayor, after having assumed the mostly ceremonial post after his election to the council in March. Duvall was appointed mayor pro tem.
