Council OKs Doors for Massage Rooms

The City Council this week approved a new law that allows doors to be placed on massage rooms, but only in a way that provides limited privacy to the people behind them.

The new law allows full-length doors to be placed on massage and dressing room entrances, but only if they cannot be locked and are fitted with an unobstructed reverse peephole that allows for visual inspections from outside the room. Curtains, draw drapes or swinging three-quarter-length doors may also be placed at the entrance of the rooms.

Full doors had been banned from massage businesses as a means to curb prostitution and other potential illegal activity. The new law acknowledges that the same protections offered by banning the full-length doors can be ensured by outlawing locks and requiring peepholes on those doors.
