Who Needs Lawyers?

Share

Howard Rosenberg repeats a familiar cliche in his commentary on the election: “You hate lawyers until you need one” (“A Case of Love, Hate for Lawyers,” Dec. 1).

But do we need them? More and more Americans are signing on to the ideas of pro se (self-defense in court) and alternative dispute resolution (keeping the lawyers out of our affairs). With the advent of the Internet, we are beginning to realize that the convoluted legalisms of our system can be simplified, and a simple search on a good search engine can help us pull together enough information to let us defend ourselves in court.

The election hoopla is just helping more of us realize that maybe we don’t need them.
