Rock band Rage Against the Machine, whose management label had instructed Sony Music Corp. to bump Napster users off the service for swapping copies of its tunes, has apologized to fans. A note, posted on the band’s Web site, said the band was not told that Sony had been filing complaints to Napster since late November and that an untold number of fans were dropped from the service for exchanging tracks off the band’s new record, “Renegades.” The notices have since stopped and the band “will be more vigilant about this matter,” wrote band member Tom Morello.
