Lawyers’ Windfall Is Out of Order
* Re “Lawyers Due $88.5 million in Smog Case” (Dec. 1):
I think state Controller Kathleen Connell said it best: “How they can justify this outrageous fee baffles the mind.” The lawyers who are fleecing California with this fee will try to justify it by saying that it’s only 13% of the overall settlement.
Frankly, that doesn’t hold water when you consider that $88.5 million is still going to come out of taxpayers’ pockets. No “fuzzy math” is going to justify this award.
