He Won’t Feel Weight of Guilty Conscience

From the Honesty Is the Best Policy Dept., Edmonton Oiler center and captain Doug Weight talked himself out of two assists Saturday night in the Kings’ 4-2 victory.

Weight, who came into the game on an eight-game point streak, was given assists on goals by Ryan Smyth and Anson Carter in each of the first two periods, then went to the official scorer at Skyreach Centre and said the points were inaccurately credited.

Instead, Rem Murray (on Smyth’s goal) and Smyth (on Carter’s) received the assists and Weight’s streak ended.

King defenseman Jere Karalahti is not on the trip that ends tonight at Vancouver.

His recovery from a bruised foot, believed close during the middle of last week, apparently has slowed. He was scratched Saturday for the fourth game in a row, with Jaroslav Modry taking his shifts in a pairing with Aki Berg.

Karalahti’s injury came when he blocked a shot by the New York Rangers’ Theoren Fleury at New York. The puck bounced back to Fleury, who then scored.

King winger Glen Murray said he would try his knee in a Monday skate. Murray has been sidelined since Nov. 18 because of a knee injury and has been rehabilitating since arthroscopic surgery revealed the extent of the injury.

* Update--Vancouver goalie Felix Potvin escaped Coach Marc Crawford’s doghouse with a 6-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night in a game in which the Canucks dented the evolving legend of rookie goalie Evgeni Nabokov by chasing him in the second period. Rookie center Harold Druken, who had three goals at San Jose, wasn’t even in the NHL when Jamie Storr shut out the Canucks, 2-0, on Nov. 9. Potvin’s teammate, Bob Essensa, is 8-1-1 with a 2.03 goals-against average. Stephane Fiset is expected to be in goal for the Kings for his third game since recovering from an exhibition-game knee injury. Fiset is 2-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average.
