Man Sentenced in Fraud
The owner of a Chatsworth-based health care company was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison Monday for submitting bogus Medicare claims, officials said.
George Powers, 55, who owns Supreme Health Care Services, was also ordered to pay more than $385,000 in restitution, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office. Powers’ company was placed on probation for two years, he said.
According to officials, federal Department of Health and Human Services investigators determined that Powers offered nursing homes free saline solution and irrigation syringes and then submitted reimbursement claims to Medicare, regardless of whether the products had been supplied.
The scheme, which ran between 1993 and 1995, billed Medicare $1.6 million for products that were not provided.
