X-pectant Gamers

Given the retailing fiasco over Sony’s PlayStation 2--a drought in availability has folks hawking the video game console on EBay for several hundred dollars--some game fans already are looking toward the future. They want their X-Box, the game device being developed by Microsoft and slated to debut sometime next fall. When it’s supposed to hit stores is still unknown. But die-hard gamers don’t care. They’re already starting to pony up for the machine. Staff at the Software Etc. in Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza say they have been taking reservations for several weeks. So far, more than 200 people have plopped down $10 each to put their X-Box on hold. The same goes for Babbage’s, which is owned by the same parent company. “It’s pretty crazy, but it’s only $10,” said a Babbage’s worker at the shop in Pleasanton, Calif., which has taken deposits from about 100 people.
