A World of Choices

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

By this weekend, parents of San Fernando Valley students in the Los Angeles Unified School District should have received a “2001-2002 Choices” brochure describing the district’s specialized magnet programs in fields such as computers, health care and law enforcement.

On Saturday, the animal studies/biological sciences zoo magnet at North Hollywood High School will hold an open house for prospective students. Anyone may attend the introductory program conducted in a complex of bungalows--where classes are taught--at the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park.

The zoology magnet was named the top high school science program in the state by the California Department of Education’s science unit, said zoology magnet coordinator Linda Gill.

During a recent school day there, teacher Barry Shapiro worked with his class on advanced projects in vertebrate physiology and sensory receptors in humans. Students in Seth Gillum’s animal studies class studied the behavior of a sea lion at the zoo.

Other magnet schools in the Valley will hold open houses or offer on-site visits by appointment in the coming weeks. The application deadline is Jan. 26.

An entrance exam is not required for admission to magnet schools, but students now enrolled in magnet programs will be given priority, as will students in crowded district schools and those in which the minority student population is more than 70%, officials said.

Students who have been on a waiting list the last three years and those with siblings already enrolled in programs also receive priority.

Applicants will receive notification letters in May. Applications also will be available at area schools, officials said.

Here are the Valley’s high school magnet programs. For elementary and middle school programs, consult the “Choices” brochure.
