Activist to Stage Piece on Gay Immigration

Veteran performance artist and activist Tim Miller comes to Orange County for two nights to present “Glory Box,” hosted by the Rude Guerrilla Theatre, Jan. 5-6.

“Glory Box” is a solo performance piece titled after the Australian term for a hope chest. The tale is based on the real-life struggles Miller and his partner of five years, Australian citizen Alistair McCartney, face with U.S. immigration laws that deny citizenship rights to same-sex partners. Miller, who lives in Southern California, performed the piece at the Laguna Art Museum in January.

Miller is best known as one of the NEA Four--artists who had their National Endowment for the Arts grants overturned in 1990 for addressing gay, lesbian or feminist themes. The other artists are John Fleck, Karen Finley and Holly Hughes. The artists successfully sued the U.S. government, but the Supreme Court partially overturned the decision.
