What: “Outside the Lines: Inside the Deal”

When: ESPN, Sunday, 6:30 and 11 a.m.; ESPN2, Sunday, 11:30 a.m.

ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” celebrated its 10th anniversary this week, and the offshoot weekly series is now into its eighth month. This latest weekly show provides a behind-the-scenes look at a major baseball deal in the making.

ESPN got a ringside seat to see how outfielder Manny Ramirez’s eight-year, $160-million deal with the Boston Red Sox came about. Cameras followed Ramirez’s agent, Jeff Moorad, as he met with his client, worked the phones and met with general managers.

Here’s a synopsis of one of the meetings:

Pat Gillick, general manager of the Seattle Mariners, asks, “Would Manny consider coming to Seattle?”

Moorad says, “Well, one of the questions he had was whether you’re really going to move the fences in. In all seriousness, he asked me that.”

Says Mariner president Chuck Armstrong, “We have the ability to tailor the ballpark to our team a little bit. So yes, we would definitely consider that.’

Here’s how Moorad informed Ramirez about the Red Sox:

“I heard from Dan Duquette, the general manager of the Red Sox. I told Duquette that Pedro [Martinez] was a good friend of yours, that you obviously know the Red Sox situation well, that your preference was to stay in the American League.

“I also like the fact that there’s a significant Latino population in Boston--there are a lot of Dominicans. When Pedro pitches up there, they have an entire ballpark full of Dominican flags. The more I hear, Manny, I believe this process is not going to really get going in a more serious way until the winter meetings.”
