Clancy’s Adjusting His Power Game

Share

Sam Clancy, the Trojans’ best power player, is having trouble adjusting to efforts by officials to call games closer this season.

So far Clancy has fouled out of one game, Thursday against Pepperdine. But Clancy leads the Trojans in fouls (23), and the last three games has been taking himself out of games for long stretches because of fouls. It’s one reason he has scored less than 10 points in two of the last three games.

Clancy said he’s trying to keep himself from getting frustrated by all the whistles around him, but it has been tough just the same.

“It’s difficult because I don’t think the referees have been consistent in their calls,” Clancy said. “Some games they let us play, other games they don’t. For example, most of the calls on me Thursday were ticky-tack, touchy fouls.

“I don’t know if there will be more consistency in the Pac-10 as to what we can and can’t do. Right now you don’t know.”

At the same time, Clancy said he needs to be smarter in games that are being called tightly.

“What I have to change is, when I get two fouls I have to get into the flow of what they’re calling and don’t get any dumb fouls by reaching or gambling,” Clancy said. “I can’t give the referees a reason to call anything on me.”
