A Prayer for Smooth Floating

In the hope that the Thai float being readied for the Rose Parade will enjoy a safe and successful journey down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena on New Year’s Day, a blessing was offered over it Friday by Buddhist monks.

The blessing, which included traditional Thai dancers, was attended by Thai government officials, Thai media and members of the American Thai community. As they chanted their prayers, the monks from Wat Thai Temple in North Hollywood were connected by a string that they unwound and each held onto.

The float, sponsored by Thai Airways, is based on historical and cultural legacies of Thailand. It is among those under construction at a tent-warehouse in Duarte. More than 50 floats will be featured in the parade, which begins at 8 a.m. Jan. 1.
