An 8-year-old Oxnard boy who suffered a fractured skull after he was hit by a car in front of his Port Hueneme school Monday, will be moved to a rehabilitation facility by the weekend, officials said.

Sergio Martinez has drifted in and out of consciousness since arriving at the pediatric intensive care unit at Santa Barbara’s Cottage Hospital, officials said.

He remained in fair condition Wednesday and will next go to an undisclosed rehabilitation center for intensive treatment, hospital officials said.

Sergio’s skull was fractured when he was hit by a car and then fell and struck the pavement while attempting to cross Teakwood Street in front of Sunkist Elementary School. The boy’s mother as well as dozens of parents and students witnessed the accident, which occurred about 7:45 a.m. as children filed in for classes.

The driver was not cited.
