Christopher Redlich Sr.; Helped Modernize Ports

Christopher Redlich Sr., 85, chairman of Marine Terminals Corp., who was instrumental in spreading containerized shipping to ports around the world. A native of Seattle who spent most of his life in San Francisco, Redlich headed one of the largest container handling companies in the nation and helped modernize the ports of Long Beach, Oakland, Calif., and Anchorage, Alaska. He also advised countries from Saudi Arabia to China on developing modern ports. Redlich was an advisor to the National Academy of Sciences on transportation issues, served on the executive committee of the Pacific Maritime Assn. and was a board member of the National Cargo Bureau. A graduate of Stanford University, he served in the Army in World War II. An accomplished amateur golfer, Redlich was president of the San Francisco Golf Club and also of the city’s World Trade Club.
