Citizens Sought for Police Academy

The Newport Beach Police Department is accepting applications for its annual Citizens’ Police Academy, which seeks to increase the public’s understanding of police operations.

Experts teach the 12-week course, covering topics such as narcotics, major crimes, patrol, traffic, helicopter operations and SWAT (special weapons and tactics). Students participate in traffic stops and crime scene investigations.

The class will run from 7 to 10 p.m. every Thursday beginning Feb. 8. To participate in the course, applicants must live or work in Newport Beach, be at least 21 and have no felony convictions, outstanding warrants or pending criminal cases.
