Hot Times Continue as Simi Valley Hits 87

Simi Valley ranked as one of the two hottest places in the nation Friday. Along with Riverside, the city reached a high of 87 degrees.

“It was unbelievably hot,” said Curt Kaplan, a weather specialist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. Simi Valley also ranked hottest in the nation Wednesday, when temperatures got up to 80 degrees. Kaplan said the warm weather is due to a Santa Ana wind pattern.

“When you get those kind of offshore winds, it can really warm things up,” he said.

On Friday, Simi Valley also beat its own heat record for Dec. 29. On the same day in 1980, temperatures climbed to 84 degrees.

Other cities around Ventura County also reported temperatures in the high 70s and 80s Friday. And the warm, sunny weather should continue through the weekend, Kaplan said.

Meteorologists expect the weather in Ventura County to be locally breezy below the passes and canyons this morning, with highs in the mid-70s to low 80s. Along the coast, the highs should be in the mid-60s to lower 70s.

Temperatures should reach 85 in Simi Valley, 82 in Westlake Village, 75 in Oxnard and Thousand Oaks and 74 in Ventura, according to Weather Data Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.

No rain is expected for either New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, weather officials said.
