Motorola Sales Plan

Share

Motorola will unveil a plan today to sell packages of phone chips and technology to companies that want a one-stop approach to buying the innards of mobile phones. Until now, the company has sold individual chips to other companies but kept its so-called platform products--packages that include chipsets, software and development tools--for internal use by other Motorola units. As wireless use mushrooms worldwide, Motorola is betting that a growing number of consumer-products firms will want to add mobile phones to their offerings--even if they have little experience in the complexities of phone electronics. Motorola’s new strategy, to be built around the company’s recently announced DSP56690 processor, will include offering firms different combinations of built-in features and chips. All the products will be based on the Global System for Mobile Communications, the most popular wireless phone technology.
