Koll Development Co., one of the nation’s largest developers, said Tuesday it will create a $50-million shopping and commercial complex in a Portland, Ore., suburb, its first retail project in that metropolitan area.

The complex, called Wood Village Town Center, is planned as a 50-acre center containing 500,000 square feet in the suburb of Wood Village.

The center has signed an agreement with Fred Meyer, the food and general merchandiser owned by Kroger Co., to anchor the shopping center along with Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse. Kroger also owns Ralph’s Grocery Co. and Food 4 Less Warehouse.

The project, scheduled to begin in April, should take about a year to complete, Koll said. Koll also developed Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton and several business parks in other Portland suburbs.
