The City Council voted to officially support the anti-El Toro airport initiative, Measure F, on the March 7 ballot. Proponents hope the initiative will kill the county’s plans for an international airport at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station by requiring a two-thirds public vote to approve it and other projects. Council members have opposed the county’s plans to build the airport since at least 1994, when Orange County voters narrowly passed the pro-airport Measure A. “We’ve been out there in a leadership role [against the airport] ever since,” Councilman Peter Herzog said.
