An express train derailed in western Germany early today, killing at least six people and injuring dozens.

Police spokesman Peter Massen said 30 rescue vehicles were on the scene of the crash, which occurred at 12:13 a.m. south of Cologne. Four helicopters were also dispatched there to transport victims, including 18 who were seriously injured.

About 250 to 300 people were unhurt on the nine-car train, which began its trip in Amsterdam en route to Switzerland.
