Homeowners United to Stop the Helicopters, a group of residents opposed to Camp Pendleton’s two 3,000-foot airstrips being built 3 1/2 miles from the city limits, has begun interviewing lawyers and hopes to pick up where the city left off by raising funds to sue the Marines.

The City Council recently voted 4 to 1 not to pursue legal action against Camp Pendleton, based on aviation attorney Barbara Lichman’s advice that the council would not gain additional concessions from the base through litigation.

The homeowners group believes it can sue the military on the grounds that its environmental assessment of the airfield did not account for the impact of other air traffic in the area, said Brad Malamud, director of legal affairs for the group.
