Flight 261

The emergency agencies’ response to the crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 reflected the best of government agencies. The citizens’ response to the crash of Flight 261 reflected the best of the public.

The media’s and press’ obnoxious intrusion into the grief of surviving relatives (of crash victims) reflected the absolute worst of society.

I am puzzled by the extensive national coverage of one airplane tragedy and the [scant] coverage of another one in Africa on Jan. 30. Surely if the heavy coverage of the L.A. accident is because plane crashes “send a collective shudder” and “transfix the nation for days” (Feb. 4), then both accidents are valid data for worrying air travelers. In many cases, foreign air accidents have prefigured very similar ones in the U.S.

As a frequent flyer I find the African accident more gripping, because I want to know how the 10 survivors managed to get out.
