Thirteen-year-old Jesse Fernandez on Tuesday night handed council members a petition urging them to build a skateboard park in Stanton. Fernandez, a skateboarder, had collected about 40 signatures from residents in his neighborhood across from City Hall.

Fernandez said many residents had complained that skateboarders make too much noise and block the city streets. “We really don’t want to cause any problem,” Fernandez said. “We just want to skateboard.”

Fernandez’s petition follows a heated debate about skateboarding in another Stanton neighborhood. Last week the Stanton Park Neighborhood Assn. erected signs banning skateboarding. The city removed those signs Tuesday morning, saying they had been placed on city property.
