County to Celebrate 150th Anniversary

And you thought it was tough planning your kid’s birthday party.

Los Angeles County celebrates its 150th birthday next week, and county officials have been scrambling to throw together appropriate festivities. Of course, they run a sprawling network of government agencies best known for distinctly nonparty facilities such as County-USC Medical Center or Mens Central Jail.

So the focus for the county’s birthday will be its network of museums and public gardens, which will be open for free over the weekend of Feb. 19 and 20, officials announced Tuesday.

And to cap it all off, there will be a parade down Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile--near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Petersen Automotive Museum and other museums--on the afternoon of Feb. 20 showcasing Los Angeles County’s ethnic diversity.

“This is a once-in-150-years offer--our services for free,” quipped Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky at a morning news conference with the other four county supervisors.

The board Tuesday also voted to give the public another gift. Between Feb. 18--the county’s official birthday--and March 5, all fines at county libraries will be waived for those who bring in their overdue books.
