Police Withdraw From University

Thousands of police officers withdrew from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, returning control to university officials driven out by a student-led strike. Meanwhile, leftist politicians, union members and students marched through Mexico City demanding the release of dozens of people jailed after the end of the nine-month strike at Latin America’s largest university. Of 745 strikers arrested Sunday, 579 had been freed by Tuesday. About 18 alleged ringleaders face charges of looting, violent robbery and causing grievous bodily harm. An additional 248 students were arrested in an incident last week at a high school affiliated with the university and were still being held. Eighty-five of them face charges of looting and terrorism.
