Still More on Cockfighting

Share

W.R. Turner’s letter, with its asinine suggestion that we legalize cockfighting (Jan. 16), states: “If it were put to a vote today, the public would legalize this noble sport.” I’m sure the public would vote to send all those immigrants who enjoy cockfighting back where they came from.

Turner points out that “millions of chickens are killed daily to feed the population of America” and asks “why should the death of a few thousand in blood sport cause such an uproar?” The chicken harvester is akin to the hunter, stalking food for the tribe, while the cockfighter is akin to the 5-year-old boy with a magnifying glass, roasting ants on the sidewalk to see them die.

Turner refers to cockfighting as “noble.” Noble for whom? The losing rooster, who gets discarded so callously by its owner (witness to the picture of the dead rooster in the trashcan)? The winning rooster, who is content to escape alive? The rooster’s owner, who is not the one being thrust into a pit to fight for his life? Sounds cowardly to me.
