House Gets Another Shot at Bruins

Share

The Bruins prepare for another assault by the most dangerous weapon in the Pacific 10, comforted because they shut him down the last time, but worried because they shut him down the last time.

Arizona State senior guard Eddie House, averaging 22.9 points a game, about five more than anyone else in the conference, has scored at least 42 points three times since Dec. 18, but had 18 at Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 22. That’s only 18, because 12 came in the first six minutes, on four three-pointers, and he finished only five of 17 from the field.

Now comes the chance for revenge, Thursday in Tempe, with UCLA trying to remain on a reasonable path for an NCAA bid.

Now comes the House on a mission.

“If he’s human, I would think so,” said Ray Young, a high school rival of House’s in the Bay Area and the Bruin guard who played the biggest individual role in the first meeting. “We kind of shut his water off in the second half. I expect, the competitor that he is, he’ll come out with a lot of fire.

“He’s probably going to try for a 30- or 40-point game, and he’s probably due for a 30- or 40-point game. We’ve just got to bring a collective team effort to try and shut him down.”

Said Rico Hines, who got to know House while visiting former Bruin Toby Bailey, now with the Phoenix Suns, last summer in Arizona: “And also, we’ve beat them 22 straight times. This is his senior year. He’s never beaten us. So not only did we shut him down the last time, but he hasn’t beat UCLA yet and this is his last chance.”
