Curry Rejoining the Team? Say It Ain’t So, Coach Fro

Knock, knock.

Who’s there?

Edniesha.

Edniesha who?

Edniesha wants to play hoops again.

You mean right here at Cal State Northridge?

That would be the place. Come on Coach Fro, open the door. I just want to rap.

Oh, I don’t like rap. Maybe a little R&B;, though.

Can we talk, please?

This isn’t Coach Fro. She’s out scouting. Yeah, that’s it. She’s out scouting.

Sure sounds like her. You sure you’re not Coach Frozena Jerro?

Let me look. Nope. It’s not me, er, her. I would know.

Who are you?

Just a friend. Yeah, that’s it. Just a friend.

All right, then, girlfriend. Can you give Coach Fro a message?

I will if you promise to go away.

Tell her Edniesha Curry said she’s sorry for quitting the team last month and she wants to come back.

I’ll tell her, but Coach is pretty steamed. You let the team down.

That was very immature and selfish of me. I want to make amends.

You grew tougher skin in three weeks? Didn’t you say the coaches were too hard on you?

Yes, I did. I’m one of the best point guards in the country. I’m the best player ever at this school. I needed to be treated differently.

Hmmm, you don’t sound too repentant.

Yes I am, yes I am. I’ve grown so much in the last few weeks.

I’m not Coach Fro, mind you, but if I were, convince me to take you back.

Well, I can score like 18 points a game. I can sink three-pointers by the bushel. I can drive the lane and blow by defenders like they were nailed to the floor . . .

Yeah, yeah, tell me more.

I can pass pretty well and I can hang on defense. And the team is losing without me.

Isn’t that the pitiful truth. That Big Sky Conference championship is almost history. And we, I mean they, can pretty much kiss the NCAA tournament goodbye.

Maybe not, if Coach Fro gives me a second chance.

You know, and I believe I speak for Coach Fro, everybody deserves a second chance. We all make mistakes. But the team might resent you coming back now.

Hey, I’ll talk to them. They’ll understand. They’re my friends.

You should have thought about friendship before you quit. The ladies would probably cut you some slack, but Coach Fro might not want to send the wrong message.

Ah, come on. What do they have to lose besides more games?

Only a few important things, like credibility, integrity, honor. Like not being able to wake up, look in the mirror and smile proudly for being a stand-up person.

I can only apologize and promise to do my best.

Very honorable, but the way I see it, it’s five games late and several jump shots short. I think Coach Fro would be very forgiving to patch things up with you for next season, but not before. When you make choices, you must live with the consequences.

You made your point, just tell Coach Fro I stopped by, all right?

I will. Now you go, girl.
