Supervisors Fund Nurses’ Visits to New Parents
Registered nurses will visit new parents at home to help with health and parenting issues, under a three-year program that the Board of Supervisors on Friday agreed to fund with $18.7 million.
The expenditure is the first use of more than $300 million in welfare funds that the county has accrued during the past few years as its welfare rolls dropped. The county has come under increasing pressure to spend the money quickly, before the federal government seizes it back.
Supervisors delayed making any expenditures until a detailed strategic plan was drawn up late last year. County officials expect to make other allocations by June. The home visitation program is expected to be augmented by tobacco tax revenue from the county’s Proposition 10 Commission.
