A Volunteer Spirit

Your article on golfer Muffin Spencer-Devlin gave us a glimpse of what a manic episode can look like. However, the story neglected to mention Muffin’s volunteer work on behalf of the mentally ill. For several years, she has been a sought-after speaker on mental illness, increasing awareness among young people and reducing the stigma that accompanies the illness. The past three years, she has been chairperson of the Mental Health Classic, an Orange County golf tournament that benefits H.O.M.E.S, Inc., an organization that provides housing and support services to the indigent mentally ill.

Hopefully, Muffin’s courage in exposing her illness will help the millions who struggle with this largely misunderstood chemical disorder.
