Dozens of visiting Americans have received citations since this Mexican border city began an aggressive campaign to enforce traffic laws in its often-chaotic streets.

Officials have more than tripled the number of traffic enforcement officers. Since the effort began Jan. 24, officers have been averaging 600 citations a day, compared with about 100 before the campaign.

The tickets aren’t cheap. Running a red light or speeding costs the equivalent of about $50. Failing to use a seat belt or driving a car with a faulty exhaust system runs about $30. Illegal parking costs $20.

Americans who get citations can mail their payment to a post office box in San Ysidro if they don’t want to appear before a judge to argue their case.
