Miles White; Costume Designer on Broadway

Miles White, 85, a designer who worked mainly in New York theater creating imaginative costumes for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first two Broadway hits, “Oklahoma!” and “Carousel,” and later winning Tony awards for “Bless You All” and “Hazel Flagg.” A native of Oakland, White studied at California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and California School of Arts and Crafts in Oakland before attending UC Berkeley. He moved to New York after trying unsuccessfully to find work as a costume designer in Hollywood. His Broadway debut came in 1938 in the musical “Right This Way,” and he subsequently designed for such shows as “Best Foot Forward,” “Ziegfeld Follies,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “Pal Joey.” Starting in 1944, White designed 10 productions for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and 10 shows for the Ice Capades. Active in films, White won Academy Award nominations for “The Greatest Show on Earth,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” and “Around the World in 80 Days.” On Thursday in New York.
