Re “McCain Rebounds, Wins Primaries in Michigan, Arizona,” Feb. 23: John McCain is like the bumblebee that aerodynamically is not supposed to be able to fly. However, the bumblebee doesn’t know that fact and keeps right on flying. Go, John!

I am one of the independent voters who voted for McCain in Michigan. I am writing to you to let you know how offended I am when I hear my vote being discounted as a spoiler vote. I voted for the man I felt would best represent me as president and given the chance will vote for him again this fall. Independents are becoming a larger percentage of the population and should not be dismissed so lightly.

I am angered by the fact that Democrats and independents are going to get McCain nominated for our party’s presidential bid. The real chance for Republicans to regain the presidency is with George Bush. Democrats can vote to nominate McCain now, and then when the real election is upon us they can jump ship and vote for Al Gore. If McCain gets the Republican nomination it will not be because Republicans want him there. It will be because of his support by Democrats and independents. If the Democrats want him so much he should be put on their party’s ballot.

Oxymoron: Bush now states that he wants the support of Republicans and like-minded independents. Tilt! Game over.

For those who think McCain is a centrist and a moderate, I’d like to point out a little-touted fact: McCain’s record in the Senate has earned him high ratings from the Christian Coalition, and he supported all of the items in [former House Speaker] Newt Gingrich’s “contract with America.” Anyone still think he’s moderate?

Martin Anderson’s fulsome championing of Bush (Commentary, Feb. 22) seems somewhat tarnished by his decision to gratuitously mention McCain’s signed confession during his ordeal as a POW in Vietnam. I think the Bush supporters would be well advised to avoid comment on military service while touting their candidate.

Re Anderson’s article about George W. calling a meeting of his top advisors to design new policies for his administration to be: No thank you! I saw enough of those failed, go-nowhere policies in the last Bush administration. George Shultz, Condoleezza Rice, Richard Perle, Michael J. Boskin and Martin Feldstein didn’t do much the first time around; why invite them back? Thanks but no thanks. McCain, Gore--anybody but George W.

Bush’s defeats in Michigan and Arizona remind me of the Catholic adage: He who goes into the conclave pope comes out cardinal.
