Matadors Have Full Plate but Don’t Expect More Curry

Share

It is growing more apparent each day that Edniesha Curry will not return to the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team.

Curry, the Matadors’ disgruntled point guard, did not accompany the team on its two-game trip that begins tonight at Eastern Washington and concludes Saturday at Portland State.

Northridge (14-8, 8-4 in conference play), in third place and 1 1/2 games behind first-place Montana, will play its final four conference games on the road. Seemingly without Curry.

Coach Frozena Jerro said last week she and Curry had discussed the possibility of the player’s return. Jerro said this week circumstances have not changed.

Curry, the Matadors’ scoring leader, avoided talking to the media. But she has remained in close proximity, even sitting in the stands at home games.

Curry’s roommate, guard Jamilah Jones, quit with Curry after a loss at Montana in January. But Jones has returned, and Northridge is 3-3 without Curry, including a 65-49 victory over Montana last week at the Matadome.

Jones said she doesn’t know whether Curry will return.

“It’s up to Coach Jerro now,” Jones said.

Curry led Northridge in scoring in 10 games this season, most of any player.

Since Curry’s departure, the scoring load among the Matadors has been shouldered by forwards Lynda Amari and Neda Milic.

Amari, a transfer from Ventura College, has led the team in scoring in four of six games without Curry, scoring a season-high 22 points against Northern Arizona.

Milic was selected Big Sky player of the week after having 34 points and 17 rebounds in two games last week. Milic scored 19 against Montana.

The Matadors’ lineup tonight will have an international flavor. Three starters hail from foreign countries.

Amari is from Moneteau, France. Milic is from Belgrade, Serbia. Guard Daphne Verrept is from Antwerp, Belgium.
